Charles Obas

1927 – 1969

Obas was born in the mountainous north region of Plaisance, Haiti.  He was a member of the Centre d’Art during the 1940’s but left to aid in the formation of the Foyer des Arts Plastiques.  His work was recognized by the National Office of Tourism with a first prize award and is best known for his inspirational renditions of rain and the metaphorical turbulence of Haitian living.  He was a master at capturing the enduring spirit and optimistic cultural perspective that contrasts the common struggles of life.
