Calixte Henry
1933 – 2010
Born in Port-au-Prince, Calixte Henry began his artistic journey in 1955 as a student at the Art Center in Haiti. In 1959, he left the school to travel his own path and took an interest in impressionism and cubism while working with the Monnin Gallery. To immerse himself in the context of the movement, he replaced his paint brushes with razor blades and later with knives to elevate the finesse and illumination of his paintings.
Calixte Henry was masterful at distilling the purity of essence of his work. Disciplined linework and use of contrasting tones countered the refined nature of his spartan utilization of detail with a balance of color to express the personality of the piece. His work is characteristically defined in a spectrum of blue, pink and green hues.
