Xavier Amiama

1910 – 1969

Xavier Amiama was born in Cuba, studied art in the Dominican Republic and in 1935, settled in Port-au-Prince.  His association with Pétion Savain and other like artists qualified him as one of the rare painters that thrived before the Centre d’Art was established.  As an original member of this elite community, he participated in shows for the 1939 New York World’s Fair and later as a single artist at the Art Center.

His work can be characterized by his disciplined use of light to create movement within the subject.
