Jacques Enguerrand-Gourgue

1930 - 1996

Born in Port-au-Prince, Jacques demonstrated a high proficiency for painting as a young man.  He exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art by age 17 and won the prestigious gold medal at the Port-au-Prince Bicentennial celebration.

Remaining true to his heritage, his painting style is uniquely reflective of the common man’s strife and hardship of rural Haitian life.  Voodoo ceremonies and nature imagery are central themes to his art.

Acclaimed as one of Haiti’s leading artists to represent the modern movement, his art is exhibited throughout the world and resides in many prominent collections.
