Seymour Etienne Bottex

 1922 – 2016

Bottex was born in the Port Margot, Haiti and started his career as a photographer.  Encouraged by his brother Jean Baptiste, also an established artist, he began by drawing in color, informing his future work with his signature and distinctive curved lines and rich use of primary colors.

He joined the Centre d’Art in 1961 and began to paint in the atelier of the Galerie Issa.  His work typically depicted biblical, local and historic themes, but all painted with a tender quality and sense of humor with reverence to everyday Haitian scenes.  He is considered one of the most regarded and sought-after Haitian Naïve painters.
