TIGA aka Jean-Claude  Garoute

1935 – 2006

Tiga was born in Jeremie, Haiti in 1935.  He was a painter and sculptor, cofounder of the museum of ceramic art named Poto-Mitan, and together with Maud Guerdes Robard founded the Saint Soleil school of Haitian painting.

Considered an abstract painter, Tiga refined his “Soley Brile” method, employing a combination of ink and acid for his expressions. In the 80’s, Tiga created Kaytiga, a gallery and cultural center for art education.  His paintings are celebrated and exhibited throughout the world.
